NOTE: This web site was produced by Clifford and Clea Mefford on 28 Dec 2001 using Personal Ancestral File (PAF), a product of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints .  As requested this site of "KIVETT Website 1" has been removed until such time that it can be maintained and corrections are incorporated on a timely basis.  It contains very good information but in the interest of professional genealogical standards it can not be recommended until it is once again maintained and updated by its able and very talented authors and allied supporters.

It appears this KIVETT Website 1 has not been updated for several years due to  full time work and academic pursuits by Clea Mefford, wife of Clifford Mefford, his able assistant in maintaining this website.

According to Kathleen MacLennan, the following errors should be corrected if you are proposing to use data from this website:

  1. The birth date of my 2nd great grandmother, Elizabeth (Betsey) Kivett, is listed as 1805.  As far as I know, no documentation has ever been found to document her date of birth, nor her exact date of death.  She married Jesse McMasters in 1817, so that would indicate, if she was born in 1805,  that she was 12 years old at the time of her marriage, and 14 years of age when their first child, Leander, was born in 1819.  I realize that this is biologically possible, but unlikely. Most reliable researchers like Donna Wright Martin, show her date of birth as c.1800.  Others show her date of birth as c.1879. Either of these dates is more likely than 1805.

  1. My grandmother, Mary Etta Reed Scholes, died in Bald Knob, White County, AR, not Bradford.  Source: This was verified by my mother, and is documented by my grandmother’s death certificate.

  1. My father, Michael Laurence Desmond, was born 1n 1902, not 1904. Source: This was verified by my mother, and is documented by my birth certificate..

  1. Worst of all, is the outrageous nonsense listed under Gaines Washington Scholes, younger brother of my grandfather, Joseph Samuel Scholes. First of all, Gaines Washington Scholes was absolutely, emphatically married ONLY ONCE, to James Temperance Brown. She was named for her father, who died before she was born.  Her nickname was “Babe.”  My mother always referred to her as “Aunt Babe.”            They had 9 children, one of whom was Fanning (Sam) Noblin Scholes.  James Temperance Brown Scholes died in Detroit, Michigan, not Graves County, KY.  Her body was sent to Graves County, KY for burial. Source: Death Certificate showing her death in Detroit, MI.  Source: Hand written obituary, and abstract of same, which states, “Gaines W. Scholes husband of Jas. T. Brown was born April 15, 1855 near Henryville Lawrence Co Tenn on Sugar Creek. Was the son of Richard and Johanna Scholes, he confessed his faith in Christ Sept 1878. He moved Oct 17, 1872 to Graves Co, where his married life was largely spent.  Born to this union were nine children.  He is survived by his wife and seven children.”  Listed among the seven children is Sam Scholes. “Sam” was the nickname of Fanning Noblin Scholes, just as “Babe” was the nickname of his mother, James Temperance.  Source: The Memory Book used at her funeral service lists her name as James Temperance (Babe) Brown Scholes.

  1. Listed under the children of Joanna McMasters Scholes, my great grandmother is a child, “B.T., #2265.”   This is incorrect.  The youngest child of Richard Hill Scholes and Joanna McMasters Scholes was Jesse Beauregard Scholes, who was born December 9, 1861, in Lawrence County, TN, and died November 21, 1934, in Graves County, KY.  He married Eula F. Albriton, January 18, 1883 in Graves County, KY.  She died January 28, 1944, in Graves County, KY.  The only question about Jesse B. Scholes is the spelling of his middle name. Is it Beauregard or Bureagard?  I will have to look up  the sources for this info.

  1. The date of death for Peter Kivett (2G) is also incorrect. He left no will, and the exact date of his death is unknown. In 1832, Peter Kivett (2G) conveyed to his son, Ely Kivett, 191 ˝ acres of land.  Source: General Index to Real Estate Conveyances, Etc., Randolph County – Grantors. Deed Book 19, page 357. Sometime between this date, and August 3, 1835, Peter (2G) died. Bond on his estate was given August 3, 1835, James Scotten, Administrator and Eli/Ely Kivett (X) Bondsman. He had to have died before August 3, 1835.  August 22, 1835 is the date the inventory of the estate was signed by James Scotten.  Source: Inventory of the Personal Property of Peter Kivett, dec.

Subject: Kivett link update

Kathleen,

I want to express my deepest apologies for the misinformation on my web site. The information which is found there is from Census records rather than personal family records like yours.

Some of the information is also from Austin Kivett who is now deceased.

I’m presently in school and work full time, so I have been out of genealogy. I do not have the time to do the genealogy. I appreciate your corrections and will ask Dennis to take my name off of the list ("KIVETT Website 1") since I am out of commission at the present time.

I will make the corrections you have made. I will make a no date correction to Elizabeth Kivett since we do not have her date of year. I believe this date was calculated from early census records which list children according to age rather than by name and specific age. For example females 0-5.

Once again I did not mean to offend you with this information.

 Thank you,

Clea K. Mefford

    Hi Clea,

No apology is necessary, and you haven't offended me. I think it would be a shame to ask Dennis to remove your information from the website. My corrections were only meant to insure accuracy. If you will make the corrections, I will be most appreciative. If you have any records that indicate where the "Gaines Washington Scholes, and his second wife, Babe" myth came from, I will appreciate knowing the source. I can't imagine where this started.

Please put out of your mind any thoughts about offending me.

    Regards,
    Kathleen MacLennan
